In a startling revelation, it has come to light that the entire internet is actually controlled by 14 very important people through 7 real, physical keys. These important people are part of a covert organisation: the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and seem to appear straight out of a plot from a New York Times' Bestseller!
The ICANN is a secret organisation that assigns numerical internet addresses to websites and computers and translating them into the normal web addresses that people type into their browsers. In short, it maps the numbers with words that are easier to understand for humans. The organisation consists of 7 actual key holders, and 7 other backup keyholders: 14 in all. Since the year 2010, the 7 keyholders have been meeting four times a year for a secret key ceremony.
The keys unlock safety deposit boxes stashed around the world. Inside each box is a smart keycard. Putting the seven smartcards together gives a unique 'master key': a password that can access the ICANN database. During the ceremony the 7 chosen ones generate a new master key: a new password.
It must be noted that in case someone gained control of ICANN's database, he/she would in fact control the internet.
