Little Ved is just one year old but he has undergone more than 7 painful blood transfusions. When Ved was just 8 months old, he was diagnosed with Thalassemia Major. Since then he has been undergoing blood transfusions every 4 weeks. Ved’s father works in a private firm in Ahmedabad and his mother is a homemaker.

“Ved was suffering from fever since he was 6 months old. When we took him to the doctor, he advised us to get a blood report done. The results worried the doctor and he suggested that we get a complete report done”. Both Rohit and wife were tested and it was found out that they were Thalaseemia Minor. Then began the search for a cure for their son’s treatment. The temporary solution was to get blood transfusions done when Ved’s haemoglobin levels are low. The permanent solution is to get a bone marrow transplant done.
12 hours of Pain and Agony
Every 4 weeks, Ved has to be taken to hospital for the blood transfusion. Two days before the transfusion, Rohit takes Ved for a blood test. If the haemoglobin levels are not optimal, Ved has to undergo the transfusion soon.
On the day of transfusion, Rohit and his wife has a big task of taking Ved to the hospital. “He knows we are taking him to the hospital, so he runs and hides in his usual place”, say Rohit. The family as a last resort to convince Ved plays with him. They play his favourite songs and make him watch cartoons. After an hour of distracting him from the frightening thoughts of the hospital, they take him to the hospital. Once in the hospital, he falls asleep, tired from all running around and play. For the next one hour they Rohit and his wife are relieved that their son feels no pain from the blood transfusion process. “I don’t know how my wife bears the sight of our son in the hospital bed. She doesn’t take her eyes away from him. I can’t look at him during the process. I pray to God to give him strength. He is too small to bear this pain”.
When Ved wakes up, Rohit needs to come up with something to distract him again. He has to stay still till the process is completed. They give him chocolates and play his favourite songs and manage to keep him still for another 4 to 5 hours.
The Ordeal To Find A Matching Donor
When the doctors at Ahmedabad suggested that Ved should be taken to CMC Vellore for treatment, the family didn’t hesitate. Their hopes of saving their son were high when they found a 19 year old matching donor from the stem cells registry. The doctors gave an estimation of Rs 35 lakhs for the donor and transplant procedure. But three months into finding the donor and planning the transplant procedure, the donor backed out due to family pressure. The family was pushed into darkness. They were so close to saving him and they couldn’t believe that they are back to from where they started. They tried many other registries and finally managed to find a 24 year old match from US. But the estimation they received was much larger than expected. Getting a foreign donor has additional charges involved especially with tests and shipping of stem cells. The fresh estimation they received was Rs 50 lakhs. They family needs Rs 30 lakhs for the donor processes and getting the stem cells and Rs 20 lakhs for the transplant procedure.

They family is left with no hope. They have managed to collect Rs 50,000 from family and friends. They have applied to receive the PM funds with the hope of receiving Rs 5 lakhs.
